Ford B-MAX: Could This Be The Future?

For some time now Ford has been letting the B-MAX concept pop up at auto shows and exhibitions. Recently shown off in Geneva, Ford believes that this little vehicle, which is part minivan, part crossover, and part compact, will revolutionize the industry.  With it’s European designed chassis, the B-MAX will be small enough to get unprecedented gas mileage and will have a spacious interior for plenty of storage space.

Ford B MAX Easy Access Door System Explained Easy Access Door System

As one can see from the picture, the B-pillar (pillar between front and back seats) has been removed by Ford designers which results in incredibly smooth lines and improved visibility. The challenge of removing the pillar was compounded by the fact that without a B-pillar most vehicles wouldn’t fair to well in crash testing. To fix this, Ford has developed high strength materials to use in the doors to give the protection of at pillar without the encumbrance.  Sliding back doors will allow easy access to back seats while front passengers get in through conventional opening doors.

“We engineered the body to keep all the benefits of the new door concept, while make the structure strong, stiff, and light,” said Darren Palmer, Ford Europe’s Product Development Quality Director. “Creating a strong, stable body is great for handling. The B-MAX is just as stiff as the latest Fiesta, and will be just as fun to drive too.”

Ford Marks 20th Anniversary of SVT with New 2013 Shelby GT500 Convertible

To call the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 beautiful would be like calling Michael Jordan a “good basketball” player.

As the new, stunning GT500 debuted this week at Chicago’s Auto Show, crowds were blown away. Not only does the SVT customized Mustang variant look better than ever but its track performance may be equally impressive.

Celebrating SVTs 20th anniversary

As Chicago was the first place to ever see an SVT vehicle at the 1992 Chicago Auto Show (where the Mustang Cobra and F-150 Lightning were shown), it was fitting that the 20 year anniversary would be there as well.

“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is,” said SVT Global Performance engineer, Kerry Baldori. “All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis. ”

Thanks to a heart 5.8-liter supercharged V8 which makes 650 powered-up ponies, the Shelby GT500 convertible is no slouch when it comes to raw speed. According to Ford, the GT500 has been track tested to reach a top speed of over 200 miles per hour which has been limited via microchip on production model. Here’s some raw footage of this incredible machine:

And now for the new Free Lunch Contest #9 question:

“What plant is being used in the all new Ford Escape doors?”

Ford Used Unique Plant Material To Build Doors On Escape SUV

Ford Motor Co. never ceases to amaze with the amount of innovation that they bring to the automotive industry. Recently, www.media.ford.com reported that Kenaf, a tropical plant, will be used to create parts of the Escape’s doors. It is speculated that this use of Kenaf will will offset around 300,000 pounds of oil-based products in North America alone.

It may seem strange to be driving a car with plant-filled doors, but Ford promises that the weirdness is outweighed by the benefits. The specific part of the door being made from Kenaf is known as the bolster. Ford representatives share that Kenaf is a similar in looks to  bamboo shoots and that it is also cousins with cotton. Kenaf leaves can be eaten and due to the light weight of the material, door bolsters will be 25% lighter translating into better fuel economy.

“Kenaf and the other renewable materials in the Escape have made the vehicle more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient,” said Ford material engineers Laura Sinclair.

In addition to being used in Ford’s Escape, Kenaf can be found in many forms of cosmetics and paper. Ford’s bolsters are manufactured in Greencastle, Indiana by International Automotive Components.

Ford Shelby 2013 GT500 Prototype Commands Fortune At Auction

When Ford was working on developing the 2013 version of its Shelby GT500, the SVT team built a prototype test car to log plenty of track hours on. Recently that very same battered prototype (which isn’t even street legal), was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson, a collector car auction, for an incredible  $300,000.

With plenty of dirt encrusted to the exterior of the test car and diagnostic equipment still inside, bidders went on a frenzy to obtain the piece of American automotive history. Ford sweetened the deal when they offered that the winner would get the honor of having the first chance to buy a production model 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.

Every cent of the $300,000 price paid for the prototype was donated by Ford Motor Co. to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
